Experiencing dementia through a virtual tour

Virtual Dementia
A little bit of empathy goes a long way when it comes to understanding others.

An American Indian proverb states,

“Never criticize a man until you’ve walked a mile in his moccasins.”

Bottom line: A little bit of empathy goes a long way when it comes to understanding others.

It’s also a key component to caring for those with dementia. The folks at Symphony at Olmsted Falls invite anyone in the community to a free Virtual Dementia Tour, set for Wednesday, January 23, from 2 to 6 p.m.

“This hands-on, experiential program gives people a very real idea of what the physical and mental challenges are like for a dementia patient, as they go through a host of daily life tasks,” says Kristen Kessler, director of sales and marketing for Symphony.

“People should reserve their spot for the interactive, 15-minute tour,” she adds.

“When they walk in, our specialists will be on hand to explain the things they will be experiencing as their sensory skills are impaired through special glasses, headphones and mittens. They will also wear shoes that lend a sensation similar to neuropathy.”

Tour attendees will go through day-to-day tasks such as brushing their teeth or picking up objects.

“At Symphony, we make sure all of our frontline staff members show a high level of empathy and care for each patient, so they will also go through the tour,” she says.

“This program has been shown to improve communication and care. If caregivers appreciate what it feels like to stand in their shoes, this will create a more positive environment for everyone involved.”

Everyone is welcome to the Virtual Dementia Tour, set for Wednesday, January 23, from 2-6 p.m. RSVP to schedule an appointment, 440-370-1595, by January 18, 2019. Symphony at Olmsted Falls is located at 25880 Elm Street in Olmsted Falls. Respite care is also available. For more information, call 440-230-3591 or visit SymphonyatOlmstedFalls.com.
