When temps start to rise, having an HVAC system that’s cooling properly is a must
By Laura Briedis
Just like most technology nowadays, air conditioners are getting smarter.
New inverter air conditioners adjust compressor speed based on real-time cooling needs, resulting in more precise temperature control and energy savings. Smart thermostats link to your smartphone, tablet or computer, so you can control your settings from anywhere. Computer diagnostics can be sent directly to your local HVAC company to help prevent costly repairs.
What does this mean for homeowners? There have never been more ways to cool your space—and stay comfortable this summer.
“More than just helping people stay cool, we help them save money with high-efficiency products designed to reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills,” says Mark Staron II. His parents, Mark Sr. and Gayle, founded the business in 1989.
In 2025, as the Environmental Protection Agency sets new Global Warming Potential (GWP) limits for air conditioning, manufacturers will be phasing out R-410A in new units and shifting to propane-based refrigerants and other more eco-friendly alternatives.
“Though manufacturers will stop making new units that use R-410A, we still we be able to get the refrigerant to service them for the foreseeable future,” Mark says. “It really is a good time to buy a new unit this year, as prices most likely will increase next year when the new regulations go into effect.”
As manufacturers continue to produce more eco-friendly equipment, smart air conditioners can provide homeowners insight into their energy consumption and environmental footprint, helping them to make well-informed decisions.
Fine Tuning Your Air Conditioner
“We recommend that homeowners get a precision tune-up for their air conditioners every summer,” says Mark, noting the company has a dedicated staff of certified tune-up technicians and all technicians are certified by North American Technician Excellence (NATE).
“Think of an annual cooling tune-up as if it were an oil change for your home,he says. “You’d never think of going without one for your car or it wouldn’t operate properly.”
Often it is the little things that can add up to costly repairs. According to Mark, the number one reason air conditioners stop working properly is because the homeowner does not change the A/C filters regularly and they accumulate dirt.
The S&S precision tune-up is a thorough two-hour service with a 30-plus-item checklist. The technicians tune, clean, lubricate and make any necessary adjustments to keep the units running at peak efficiency.
“We do more than most companies during the tune-up, as we include a no-rinse evaporator foam cleaner that we use on the coil that has a fresh, lemon scent,” says Mark. “Besides smelling great, the cleaner helps improve energy efficiency and remove added stress on the motor.”
Maintaining Your Unit
At S&S Heating & Cooling, the family-owned business is helping customers budget better for home expenses with its Preferred Customer Maintenance Program.
“We have been offering this program as a customer service benefit, but now it is more important than ever to find ways to save money,” says Mark, noting the company is a Trane Comfort Specialist. “Customers can save money by extending equipment life, preventing costly repairs and ensuring equipment is operating safely.”
“We are thankful so many homeowners have put their trust in our company to install and maintain their HVAC equipment,” he says. “We have 400 maintenance plan customers who are taking advantage of all the savings.”
In addition to air conditioners, the company installs and repairs all types of HVAC systems, including gas, electric, boiler, steam and radiant, as well as hot water tanks, tankless water heaters and air purifiers. Setting it apart from the dozens of other HVAC companies in Northeast Ohio, S&S Heating and Cooling also has a custom metal fabrication facility so it fabricates its own sheet metal.
“We can fabricate sheet metal in our facility or on the job site,” Mark says. “We fabricate the sheet metal to fit each job specification, so not only do these fitted pieces look nicer but they also help maintain optimal air flow.”
