To get the most out of getting older, twice-weekly training at MaxStrength Fitness is the key for Theresa Weiler
By Patricia Nugent
In the winter of 2022, Theresa Weiler took a bad spill on the ice, which resulted in a complex ankle fracture and surgery that left her with 10 screws and a plate holding the ankle together. An extended period of rehab motivated the active 63-year-old to focus on improving bone density, strength, balance and flexibility.
“It was a wake-up call,” she says. “After the fall, I had a bone density scan that revealed I have osteopenia, or reduced bone density. Since I’m smaller boned to begin with, I did a lot of research on how to build bone and prevent further loss. Strength training and building muscle is the best way to do that.”
After she saw a story in Mimi Magazine about MaxStrength Fitness, she decided to give the science-backed protocol a try.
“I played volleyball, softball and tennis competitively, and was a runner throughout my adult life,” she says. “Since I was so active, I never really thought I needed strength training. I was wrong. The trainers are real professionals and I’ve continued to make strides and progress. I’m even back to running, which I hadn’t done since my fall and look forward to running a 5K race. Now going into my third year of training here, I’m just as happy and motivated as I was in the beginning.”
There’s a diverse group of trainers at the boutique studio, and she likes to schedule with different ones to get the most comprehensive experience.
“I leave every workout feeling energized,” she says. “There’s never soreness or pain. The sessions are enjoyable. They say you should have your list of ‘non-negotiables’ in life. To me staying active and enjoying my years ahead are at the top of that list.”
Now retired, Theresa says when she first joined MSF, she was working full time and was concerned she wouldn’t be able to fit it in.
“In reality, since the sessions are only 20 minutes and twice a week, they are easy to fit into early morning, lunch hour or evening,” she adds.
Uncovering Myths About Sleep
MSF Founder Jeff Tomaszewski is a research and numbers guy who appreciates the link good-quality sleep has to your overall health.
“If you’ve hit a plateau, or are having trouble losing weight, it makes sense to look at your sleep as a causal factor,” he explains.
In a recent email newsletter, he touched on a few of the biggest misconceptions.
Myth: You get used to a lack of sleep.
Fact: Your body is not engineered to adapt to less sleep.
“After weeks or months of not sleeping enough, your fatigue level may stabilize, but that doesn’t mean your body has adjusted to it,” says Jeff. “Being sleep-deprived can affect your memory, focus, decision-making and your creativity, not to mention take a toll on your metabolism, immune system, hormones, mental health and heart health.”
