The Starving Chef Recipe: Extra Sloppy Sloppy Joes

Extra Sloppy Joes
Neatness doesn’t count.

By Felicia Vargo, The Starving Chef

I’ll take these sloppy joes, extra sloppy. You can also use sloppy joe filling as a topping on hot dogs or hamburgers, too (if you are feeling wild).

Extra Sloppy Sloppy Joes

Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Makes: 4 servings

Ingredients

16 oz. ground beef
½ C ketchup
8 oz. tomato sauce
2 T spicy brown mustard
1 T Worcestershire sauce
1 small shallot, minced
1 T garlic, minced
¼ C brown sugar
Salt & pepper, to taste
Hamburger buns, for serving

Here’s How
  1. Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat. When all the beef is browned, use a colander to strain any excess grease. Rinse with cool water then transfer back to the skillet over medium heat.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the ketchup, tomato sauce, mustard, Worcestershire, shallot, garlic and brown sugar. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Pour over the cooked hamburger meat.
  3. Stir the sauce into the meat and cook until the sauce is just starting to bubble, about 10-15 minutes. Reduce the heat and cook until the sauce has thickened, another five to 10 minutes. Remove from heat. Serve on hamburger buns and enjoy!

ALTERNATIVE SLOW COOKING METHOD: Follow steps to brown meat and combine sauce. Add the cooked meat and sauce to a crock pot/slow cooker. Cook on low for four hours or on high for two hours.
