When it comes to business mergers and acquisitions, the strategy is often to bring together two competitors to reduce competition. But sometimes the merger is designed to make two non-competitors better by allowing them to offer a fuller suite of services.

It’s like bringing together French fries and ketchup, macaroni and cheese, or sweet corn and butter. Each makes the other better.

And that’s the case with the recent merger of Sewer Cleaning Company and Osbourn Plumbing & Heating. Together, the combined company now offers a full line of commercial and residential services, including anything related to getting water to and from your home and making sure that water stays where it’s supposed to be.

These services include:
• Plumbing
• Waterproofing
• Sewer cleaning
• Water heaters
• Backflow prevention
• Excavation
• Pipe-lining and reinforcement
• Boiler installation and maintenance

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with Osbourn,” says Anthony Peto, founder of Sewer Cleaning Company. “They bring more than 80 years of experience and a comprehensive range of services to our team. The work we do is critical, and it can be dirty and dangerous. That’s why it often requires special licensing. When it comes to plumbing, backflow and boiler heat, you have to get it right, and Osbourn has incredible expertise and a strong reputation for getting it right.”

The firm will be known as Sewer Cleaning Company, with Osbourn Plumbing and Heating becoming a DBA (Doing Business As). This means Osbourn Plumbing and Heating will be used as an alternative name for the firm, allowing it to maintain its brand identity while being part of the Sewer Cleaning Company.

The team now handles all plumbing services—from a clogged drain or a leaky faucet to complete plumbing installation, and from maintaining boilers in older homes to backflow prevention.

The company can now handle a wider range of services, including plumbing, sewer cleaning, backflow prevention, boiler maintenance, and high-tech pipe lining—a sewer line repair technique that doesn’t require digging up your front yard.

“Backflow preventers monitor the pressure in your water line and don’t allow that water to go back into the main line,” Anthony explains. “It’s required in many commercial enterprises, and it’s becoming more common in residential applications, too.”

The company can also help commercial property owners keep their parking lots safe and dry with a special high-pressure vacuum that sucks up mud and dirt from catch basins.

Saying “Yes”
The merger also puts Anthony and his team in a position to say, “Yes.”

“Before the merger, we primarily offered services related only to sewer line and drain cleaning,” Anthony says. “But now we can do everything under the sun in the plumbing world. It’s nice to be able to say to our customers, ‘Yes, we can do that…and that and that and that.’”

But being able to offer a complete line of plumbing services is only half the genius behind this merger. The other half is service.

“At Sewer Cleaning Company, we have always focused intensely on customer service and creating a really positive experience for our clients,” Anthony adds. “At Osbourn, Ted and his crews have had the same mindset. That means we can now offer every plumbing service imaginable and complete every job to the full satisfaction of our clients. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

And that makes bringing these two companies together as smart as combining macaroni and cheese.
