Nothing refreshes and rejuvenates a home like a professional paint job. When the family recently bought this 3000-plus-square-foot in Solon, it was in dire need of updating, a classic case of “stuck in the early 2000s.”

When the homeowner asked around about the best painting company on the East Side to pull off the whole-house transformation, the name Curb Appeal Painting kept coming up.

“Each space in the large Colonial home, from the basement to the third floor, needed modernizing,” says Curb Appeal’s Marketing Director Rob Drago. “The warm creams, taupes and beiges needed to be updated with a palette of bright white trim and cool pale grays. Over several weeks, we repainted walls and trim in the basement, foyer, kitchen, family room, dining room, living room, laundry room, hallways and all the bedrooms, as well as the ceilings.”

Since the homeowner had replaced everything from flooring to cabinetry and lighting, the soothing new color palette completed the makeover.

According to Curb Appeal Field Supervisor Eugene Shpilman, one of the most dramatic changes took place in the basement, which was paneled in dark and dreary rough cedar wood.

“It saved significant dollars to paint the walls rather than pull them all out,” he says. “And the tongue-in-groove wood planks made for an interesting textural effect when painted off-white. The space looks much bigger and brighter now. To add to the esthetic and functionality, we also were able to salvage lower cabinetry that had been removed and replaced in the kitchen and create a little wet bar area down there. We painted the old-looking oak cabinets a coordinating white shade to seamlessly blend in with the space.”

Another fun effect they created through paint was in the kitchen. They opted for a subtle sheen in white satin paint that accentuated the new tongue-in-groove ceiling.

Black is the New Black

The drama continued in the family room, where they painted a dated red-brick floor-to-ceiling fireplace a rich, saturated matte black, the same shade they picked up in the rough-hewn ceiling beams.

“Another cool element was opting to also paint the interior doors matte black,” says Eugene. “This is a growing trend we’re seeing, and it really made the lighter walls pop. Black trim and doors may have begun with the modern farmhouse style, but they have become an edgy mainstay in home renovation. In fact, Forbes Home named matte black the hottest design trend for 2024.”
