Few supplements have been more popular in recent years than the amino acid derivative N-acetyl-L-cysteine, or NAC. While available for decades, NAC surged in popularity in 2020, when functional medicine practitioners began recommending it in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Today, I’d like to discuss the benefits of NAC and explain why so many call it a respiratory, detox and wellness all-star.

In 2020, NAC was recommended by practitioners for its demonstrated ability to help prevent viruses and bacteria from adhering to the lining of the lungs. Research shows it can prevent worsening of chronic bronchitis and has even been used as a treatment for acute respiratory distress syndrome. However, NAC’s many health benefits go far beyond the respiratory system.

Studies also show it aids in both phase one and phase two detoxification. NAC supports the liver and kidneys by aiding the clearance of heavy metals. In addition, it has been shown to provide significant protection against a broad array of modern toxins and air pollutants, including those found in cigarette smoke, auto exhaust, herbicides and more.

Finally, NAC plays a vital role in the production of one of the body’s most important and powerful antioxidants, glutathione. Glutathione is found in every cell of the body and helps fight oxidative stress, which plays a role in certain disease processes.

Most practitioners recommend taking 600mg two to three times per day. My favorite is NAC 600 from Vital Choice. In addition to 600mg of NAC per capsule, it provides two important co-factors—selenium, and molybdenum—that aid in phase two detoxification.
