Meet the Artist: Kate Kisicki

We all see the world in a different way. The way local artist Kate Kisicki brings her view of the world to life by using bold, effervescent color is sure to make you take notice.

Deeply inspired by fleeting, natural phenomena, Kate is influenced by and expresses her sublime experiences in nature and energy through her vibrant, unique strokes of genius on the canvas of her choice. She marries color and materials together into varied, unexpected ways. “I am always trying to depict a space in my work, but how I get there is sometimes based on chance, and other times is controlled by me,” says Kate.

Kate’s work draws much from abstract expressionism, landscape painting, graffiti and animation. “I try to think of each painting as a window or screen into a space the viewer can escape into, or coexist with,” she notes.

Kate graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2007 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting, and from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2009 with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting. She has participated in many group exhibitions locally, in addition to exhibitions in New York and Virginia.

“Art has always played a huge part in my life, and I’ve learned to incorporate it into my life my own way,” Kate explains.

According to Kate, her work is an example of the kinds of things she wishes to see in the world, embodied through excited and sometimes overworked materials.

“Energy is evoked in varying amounts, resulting in many contrasting feelings, and thoughts for myself and the viewer. I provoke my audience into discovering imagery beneath layered materials and processes. I invoke my materials to illuminate and guide experiences for the viewer to investigate further,” she smiles.
