The staff at Mapledale Farm in Chardon has service at the forefront of everything they do. Whether they are assisting a customer in the store, providing one of their many property management and landscaping services, or they’re supporting the greater community, they do it all with the belief that taking care of each other leads to everyone’s success.

“I’ve been running this business since 1982 and it’s been in my family for almost 150 years,” says owner Dave Johnson. “You don’t stick around that long without a commitment to your customers and your community. “I have customers and employees that have been with me since I started in 1980s. There’s a trust there that extends beyond a business relationship. Customers know they can depend on us for the highest quality products and services, and we won’t let them down.”

Mapledale provides everything from bulk materials like gravel, mulch, topsoil, compost, sand and stone to all landscape supplies and hand tools, PVC pipe and fittings, weed fabric, grass seed and more.

“With fall arriving soon, many customers are ordering compost to prepare their gardens for winter. This is also the perfect time of year to order firewood bundles,” says Dave. “We offer full landscape design, installation and maintenance services for residential and commercial properties along with locally made poly furniture to furnish outdoor spaces. Chardon recently purchased a large quantity of picnic tables and benches for use in Chardon Square. Mapledale delivered the fully assembled resin furniture at no added cost. The furniture is fade and crack resistant and maintenance free which was a huge selling point for the city.”

Dave’s commitment to his customers and the community was recognized last month when he was presented with the “Chardon Chamber of Commerce 2020 Small Business of the Year” award given to a company in good standing with the community, of course, but one that also gives back.

“We simply assist with the needs of this community,” says Dave. “Helping out where needed has become part of the culture here.”

Dave is a Chardon Rotary board member and a member of the Chardon Chamber of Commerce. These organizations benefit the community by providing financial assistance to schools and individuals through fundraising and scholarships.

“Things like the Red Tulip Project, Santa’s Hideout and others raise money for local charities,” says Dave. “During Covid-19, the veteran’s pantry had empty shelves. We stepped in right away—as did the Chardon Rotary and Sheriff’s Department—raised money, gathered donations and quickly stocked the pantry. That’s what we do here.”

New to Mapledale is the ability to access products and pricing online.

“You can also pay your bill online,” says Dave. “This is convenient for our customers and we’re happy to offer that.”

It’s this mentality of service that has, in turn, also served Mapledale throughout its history. Dave has several employees who have been with him for more than 25 years and their knowledge and experience is second to none.

“No matter what your project is, our staff will guide you through it and get you the result you’re looking for,” says Dave. “It’s a matter of trust and loyalty, and it’s worked for us for almost 150 years.”

As Dave likes to say, “We’re not your typical landscape company.” And what he means by that is Mapledale does a lot more than landscaping.

“We’ll do whatever you need done,” says Dave. “If a customer needs concrete work, hauling, wildlife control, plowing, or building inspections, we can handle it. Everyone is trying to do more with less these days and property landscaping can be overwhelming. We’re already on your property. Don’t call another contractor. Let our experts handle it. Again, it’s a matter of quality, trust and a service mentality. You get all of that at Mapledale.”
