Lyndhurst Lumber is one of the area’s top suppliers of lumber and wood products for virtually any home project
By Patricia Nugent
Celebrating a century in business, the family that owns Lyndhurst Lumber is reflecting on 100 years of serving its customers with honesty, integrity, ingenuity and, above all, enthusiasm.
“We’ve evolved over the years to expand our products and services,” says General Manager Jim Mormino. “We’re proud to have had a hand in helping generations of customers beautify their homes. If you look at any home around the east side that was built in the past century, there’s a good chance Lyndhurst Lumber had a part in supplying the wood to build it.”
A Little Back Story
Founded in 1921 by three brothers, Paulette Raburn’s father, Paul Trumpp, who was a builder, took over the business in 1945 after the end of World War II. When he died suddenly in 1975, Paulette and her husband, Britt, who were schoolteachers at the time, took over the business.
Today, it’s transitioning again, and the next gen—daughter Jessica Mormino and her husband Jim—are carrying on the tradition.
Evolving and Expanding
In addition to offering a wide selection of hardwoods for commercial and residential use, over the years, Lyndhurst Lumber has expanded to carry Andersen windows and doors, exterior/interior doors, storm doors, custom moldings, decks, stairs and miscellaneous building materials.
“Professional-grade window and door replacement have become a large part of our business,” says Jim. “We put our trust in Andersen, and over the years people have put their trust in us to do the job right. We always let customers know if their windows or doors can be repaired rather than replaced. In the long run, with high performance technology geared to minimize heat transfer—replacement can save on your energy bills. And with the growing selection of styles, we can complement the esthetic of your home.”
As a natural avenue of growth, Jim says it also made sense to add a kitchen and bathroom renovation division.
Lead kitchen designer Bob Feldman along with Sue Bellan work with homeowners to bring their dream spaces to life, with cabinetry, countertops, backsplashes and hardware.
Supply and Repair Work
Lyndhurst Lumber has earned a reputation as a mecca for DIY supplies, offering anything needed for the typical homeowner to successfully complete a job.
“We do custom mill work and carpentry that’s the solution to many projects,” Jim says. “If you can imagine it, we can create it.”
Chris Donovan, the lead craftsman in the wood shop can either fix or make just about anything.
Planning Spring Renovations
With the delays in shipping, Lyndhurst Lumber is doing a lot of planning in December and January for people’s spring outdoor projects.
“We build lots of decks, either with treated wood or composite materials,” Jim says. “It’s good to get on our books now, so you’ll be the first to have your new deck in the springtime.”
He says another lumber and build job that exploded last year and shows no signs of stopping is raised garden beds, which they can custom build to fit any patio or deck space.
In the end, he says what separates them from other places, like big box stores, is know-how and customer service.
“We are problem solvers, with the expertise to help people tackle any project,” he says. “That’s what we’re here for.”
