Linking physical and mental health
By Evan Ferwerda, Owner; Alloy Personal Training
For those who are putting together an action plan to age gracefully, the pursuit of happiness should be tops on the to-do list.
The link between physical health and mental health is significant. Exercise encourages the brain to release serotonin and other feel-good hormones, leaving a lasting feeling of wellness.
Research backs up the effects. According to a recent study, physical activity improves cognitive processes and memory, has analgesic and antidepressant effects, and even induces a sense of well-being, giving strength to the ancient principle of “mens sana in corpore sano” (a sound mind in a sound body).
In a few weeks, on Sunday, November 5, we turn the clocks back and the shorter days will seem even shorter and darker, which can lead people to feel depressed.
The onset of winter also means we tend to start cocooning and engaging in fewer healthy social interactions. That’s one of the reasons the program at Alloy is so effective. People make connections with others who work out at the same time. There’s a real sense of community.
Our training is social, functional and fun. We work with advanced functional equipment—sleds, medicine balls, TRX resistance bands, kettle bells, stationary bikes and battle ropes—that’s tailor-made for foundational and functional strength training. Come join us for a free first class.
