Lake water safety

Beach recreation season has arrived. The Lake County General Health District is monitoring beach water quality at Mentor Headlands and Fairport Harbor Beach every morning as part of the Bathing Beach Program, keeping beachgoers safe in summer waters.

“A staff member collects daily samples of beach water, and we use the predictive models of the Virtual Beach software program to determine the safety of the water based on E. coli levels,” environmental health supervisor Chris Loxterman says. “Reports are posted online at our website daily, and if numbers exceed standard levels, notifications signs are posted at area beaches.”

Lake Health District recommends rinsing off right away and showering as soon as possible after lake water exposure and not drinking lake water.

“We take our samples from different spots of the lake, but if you’re swimming in another area, we can’t guarantee the same level of safety,” Chris says. “Public swimming pools including hotels, spas and park pools are also inspected and monitored.”

Lake County General Health reminds us to review water safety guidelines within our own families before heading out to area lakeshores this summer.

“Whether you live here or are just visiting, we want everyone to enjoy the summer at Northeast Ohio’s lakeshores and local pools,” Chris says. “By taking a few extra precautions, it will be a safer, healthier summer for your family.”
