Envision Ophthalmology and Wellness explains eye health and the body
By Mary Malik
The prefixes “opto” or “ophthal” indicate something related to the eye. In the world of eye care, the role of the optician, optometrist and ophthalmologist are often confused but all have their place in treating and maintaining eye health.
- Optician - An optician is an eye care technician trained to properly design and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses or any vision correcting devices.
- Optometrist - An optometrist is a healthcare professional who provides primary vision care and performs eye exams, prescribes corrective or contact lenses and can identify eye health issues and treat certain abnormalities of the eye.
- Ophthalmologist - An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor with a specialty in ophthalmology and is qualified to diagnose and treat eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and perform surgical and laser eye procedures.
Dr. E. Shanika Esparaz, founder of Envision Ophthalmology and Wellness, is a double board-certified ophthalmologist and lifestyle medicine specialist focused on eye health as it relates to whole body health and wellness.
“I offer medical and surgical treatments for macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and more,” she says. “And my lifestyle medicine specialty allows me to educate patients on the importance of a healthy lifestyle to prevent and treat diseases of the eye.”
Dr. Esparaz can detect certain things that may threaten a patient’s vision and is able to perform corrective laser procedures and treat glaucoma in the comfort of her office. Envision offers memberships packages that include yearly screenings, exams, counseling and active treatments.
