June 1976 Events

• A comprehensive search for the Loch Ness Monster began with motion sensor cameras, sonars, and television cameras beneath the surface of Loch Ness. The expedition was financed by the U.S. Academy of Applied Science and The New York Times.
• The Boston Celtics won the NBA Championship, defeating the host Phoenix Suns, 87-80 in game 6.
• Former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter won the Ohio Democratic primary and gained more than 200 delegate votes overall, putting him within 400 votes of the nomination.
• The blockbuster film Gone with the Wind was shown on U.S. television for the first time at 2:30 in the afternoon Eastern time, after HBO purchased the rights to telecast it.
• Texas Instruments released the first electronic educational toy, the “Little Professor,” which would provide random arithmetic problems to children with an adjustable level of difficulty.
• The Gong Show premiered on the NBC as a daytime program.
• The character of “Victor Lord,” featured on almost every episode of the U.S. soap opera One Life to Live, was written out of the series by having him die in a hospital after having a stroke.
• NASA launched Gravity Probe A, which confirmed Einstein’s prediction of the flow of time being slowed by a predictable rate in relation to gravity.
• Viking 1, the U.S. probe to Mars, entered into orbit around the red planet 10 months after its launch.
• The first known case of the Ebola virus began in southern Sudan.
• The United States Air Force Academy admitted women as students for the first time
• Supernatural horror film The Omen, starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick, premiered in the U.S.
