Where are a few things the doctors of audiology at Sounds of Life Hearing in Concord Township would like you to understand about hearing aids. Every person’s hearing loss is different, and no two people have the same needs.

“Just because someone you know had a bad experience with hearing aids doesn’t mean that you will,” says Sarah Curtis, Au.D., founder of Sounds of Life Hearing. “The best way to ensure success with hearing aids is to start with an evaluation by an audiologist (who can rule out any atypical conditions that may need further medical evaluation) and then work with her to find the most appropriate devices and an individualized plan for treatment.”

Hearing aids amplify sounds and their settings can be customized, or programmed, based on hearing-test results. Audiologists use patient-specific tests called “real ear measures” to confirm the hearing aids are set to meet your specific hearing needs.

“We recommend people wear their hearing aids all day long,” says Dr. Curtis. “This, combined with the most appropriate hearing aids, good communication strategies and a skilled, goal-oriented audiologist helps them get their best outcome.”

Dr. Curtis says hearing aids may initially seem loud and it can take about six to eight weeks to fully adjust to them. She notes that the price of hearing aids is generally in the $2000-6000 range, but the quality of service can vary.

“Always ask what services are included with the price and if the hearing aids can be programmed by outside providers in case you move, they close the business, or you move on to another provider,” advises Dr. Curtis.
