On March 28, 2024, the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS), Labor and Treasury announced that short-term medical insurance will be limited in duration to three months with an optional one-month extension beginning September 1, 2024.

These regulatory amendments further the goals of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by improving access to affordable and comprehensive coverage, strengthening health insurance markets, and promoting consumer understanding of their coverage options.

Many short-term plans do not have the coverage protections required by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.*

Some of these coverage mandates require coverage for pre-existing conditions, mental health and substance abuse, maternity, and no annual or lifetime limits.

These regulations impact short-term coverage issued on or after September 1, 2024.
