In October 2022, the FDA began allowing the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. The idea behind the legislation is to improve the public’s access to hearing aids and reduce costs.

Today’s hearing aids have increased in price due to technological advancements. The difference between hearing aids from 20 years ago compared to today’s devices is like comparing a rotary phone with our smart phones.

All that technology means hearing aids must be properly fit and programmed. OTC hearing aids are self-fitting, and the user conducts their own hearing test using a phone app which generates a prescription based on the manufacturer’s recommendation.

The over-the-counter option is good for those with mild to moderate age-related hearing loss who are comfortable with technology. However, it’s important to know whether your hearing loss is indeed age-related. The cause could also be anything from simple wax build-up to a serious medical condition. It’s essential to visit a qualified audiologist to understand your hearing loss before you begin the process.

Most insurance companies cover an annual hearing test, and it’s a good idea to take advantage of that benefit.

In our practice, we offer more affordable OTC options as well as full audiology services, which you cannot get if you buy your hearing aid from an electronics store. These services include hearing tests, fitting, programming, training, ongoing maintenance, and repair. Without these services, OTC users are on their own to learn to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair. However, if you are confident in your abilities, we can unbundle our services, so you pay for them only when you need them.
