Having grown up on a farm in a laid-back small town, Dr. Reno Alessio says his satellite office in the stately Wright Building, on the historic Berea Triangle, instills a sense of nostalgia.

“It’s like going back in time,” says Dr. Alessio, a board certified ophthalmologist and owner of Alessio Eye MD, while offering a tour of the spacious office that features a waiting area with refurbished brick walls and wooden floors.

“I was looking for a place to open an office in Berea. I came across this quaint building in this historical area and thought it was perfect.”

The office and its surrounding area may feel like a trip back in time, but Dr. Alessio’s three examination rooms better represent the future of eye care, housing the latest diagnostic equipment, he suggests.

“We’ve made a significant investment to make sure we can treat patients with state-of-the-art tools and high-quality service,” he explains.

The Berea location, which opened about a year ago, contrasts Alessio Eye MD’s busier Strongsville office across from SouthPark Mall on Royalton Road, and re-establishes the practice’s presence in Berea. Prior to opening the Berea Triangle location, Dr. Alessio acquired a Berea-based practice and consolidated his new patients into the Strongsville office.

“It’s not a long drive to Strongsville, but I wanted something closer for our Berea patients, he says.

“This office is much more convenient for them, and it offers a more intimate, personal experience. It’s so relaxing here, that for me, time seems to slow down allowing us to spend more quality time with each patient. While comprehensive routine examinations are done in Berea, surgery consults, such as laser assisted cataract surgery, and other advanced treatment evaluations are still done at our larger Strongsville office.”

Alessio’s advanced refraction equipment accurately measures the surfaces of a patient’s eye and calculates the perfect prescription for corrective lenses. Other devices meticulously scan for conditions like macular degeneration and glaucoma—without blowing a startling blast of air into your eye.

Along with Dr. Alessio, the Berea office team includes optometrist Dr. Chelsey Clemans. Dr. Haina Patel is scheduled to join the team in September.

Meet the Doctors
The father of five daughters and the husband of an ophthalmologist, Dr. Alessio may have first become familiar with the phrase “good eye” while playing baseball growing up. He played varsity baseball at Walsh Jesuit High School then for Georgetown University in the nation’s capital before moving on to the Medical College of Ohio and the University of Rochester Eye Institute in Rochester, NY. Laser cataract surgery is among his specialties.

Dr. Clemans, who specializes in ocular disease and contact lenses, as well as primary eye care for adults and children, worked as an optician while attending the University of Nebraska at Kearney in the state where she grew up. After graduation from the Southern College of Optometry, in Memphis, Tenn., she served at a veterans hospital in Memphis, where she focused on ocular disease management. After moving to Cleveland, Dr. Clemans worked in retail and private practice before joining Dr. Alessio. She is married with a son and daughter.

Dr. Patel is a Toronto, ON native who has served the Canton area since graduating from the State University of New York College of Optometry. Dr. Patel, who lives in Medina with her husband, also has provided eye care to veterans.

“Our doctors and staff are not only knowledgeable, but they’re also very nice people,” Dr. Alessio insists. “They are caring, compassionate and quality people who consider it a privilege to be a part of your eye care team.”

To help share their knowledge with patients, the doctors at Alessio Eye MD say they emphasize education. That’s why a large selection of educational videos is posted online at

The offices also have complete on-site optical shops where patients are fitted with the hottest styles and most popular brands of glasses.

And all glasses come with the Alessio Optical Guarantee. Since prescriptions can change due to procedures or ocular conditions, Alessio will remake glasses due to a prescription change for up to a year.

“We also will refund you the full cost of the glasses within the first 90 days as long as the frames are not damaged,” Dr. Alessio promises.

“As the father of five daughters, I know how important it is to look good while seeing well,” Dr. Alessio adds. “Our goal here is to do our best to make our patients happy, which includes helping them to achieve the best vision possible, as well as having a satisfying experience when they come to visit.”
