A new hope for depression
By Michael Louwers, MD Reset Medical and Wellness Center
As we observe Suicide Prevention Month in September, I want to emphasize there is help—including some new novel treatments—for those suffering from depression and anxiety. With the recent increasing discord, political turbulence and financial demands, we all struggle with daily stress. For some, it is all-consuming.
According to the Health Policy Institute of Ohio, suicide rates have been increasing, making suicide the fifth-leading cause of death among working-age individuals in Ohio.
As healthcare providers, our focus is on timely identification, referral and treatment of individuals at risk. Currently, there are many highly effective treatments for anxiety and depression, including counseling, medications and newer modalities, such as the stellate ganglion block, also known as a neurosympathetic reset. This procedure, which is performed at Reset Medical and Wellness Center, can dramatically reduce a patient’s fight or flight response and allow them to address triggers more effectively. Designed to complement other traditional therapies, this 20-minute outpatient procedure has proven to be effective for treatment-resistant depression.
It is our goal not only to treat patients, but to also raise awareness and educate people in the community about mental health, including recognizing the signs and symptoms of suicide risk.
If someone you know is feeling suicidal, early detection and intervention are vital. Just listening can reduce immediate risk. The next step is to contact the crisis intervention hotline at 988 or online chat at 988lifeline.org. Taking these steps can save lives.
