One of the original salons in Medina, VCS Salon & Spa is celebrating its 40th anniversary this spring and unveiling a new look that exudes an urban-modern-rustic vibe.

After the extensive renovation, the salon, which is located three blocks from the square, added more styling stations to accommodate its growing clientele and staff.

With a pretty palette of gray and terra cotta on the walls, nutmeg leather styling chairs, a stone accent wall, gray and brown wood-hued flooring, and a touch of bling on the chandelier, the salon is energized with stylishness and elegance.

Founded four decades ago as the Village Clip Shoppe off the Square by Lucy Mahoney, her two daughters, Coleen Morlock and Mary Kay Hallas, now operate the salon that has evolved to offer a multitude of salon and spa services.

“We are proud that we used all local businesses and products for our remodel,” says Coleen, who is a graduate of Medina High School and champion of everything local.

“Even with our renovation, we remain a nice blend of the new and old-time feel of Medina,” adds Coleen, who, along with Mary Kay, still works behind the chair cutting hair and trains new stylists.

“We are always welcoming new stylists to our team and helping create new jobs in Medina,” she says. “With our in-house MBA (Masters in Beauty Academy) program, we create opportunities for stylists to become leaders and provide a place for them to grow professionally.”

“This also assures our clients they are getting the best trained and educated stylists in town,” she adds.

Coleen credits the salon’s training program for its booming growth and propelling it as a leader in the industry. Led by Mary Kay, all new hairstylists go through extensive in-salon training for four to six months after graduating from cosmetology school. Working as a team, these protégés work hand-in-hand with the master designers to perfect advanced hair coloring, cutting and guest service skills.

“Our program allows stylists more hands-on experience to complement what they learned in the classroom and helps them hone their haircutting techniques and become expert colorists,” says Mary Kay.

All stylists are well versed in the latest spring beauty trends, including balayage and babylights hair color techniques that add soft, natural-looking highlights.

And for those clients who are a little bolder, the salon sells Celeb Luxury Viral Colorwash products that you shampoo in at home to add temporary unicorn-like colors that include teal, purple, hot pink, baby blue and extreme silver.

More than just hair services, the spa wing provides a calm and peaceful oasis, offering a full range of facials, massages, body scrubs, makeup, body waxing, spray tanning, manicures and pedicures.
