For the 65 million Americans who suffer from back pain, diminishing their quality of life and ability to work, Dr. Brian Filisky, of Precision Orthopaedic Specialties, has a positive message. “You have much more control over your short- and long-term situation than you think you do,” he says.

“A large portion of my practice consists of educating and enlightening my patients about ways they can help themselves,” says the chiropractor, who joined the multi-disciplinary practice of doctors, surgeons, athletic trainers and physical therapists two years ago. “We streamline and coordinate care catered to an individual’s health for the best possible outcome.”

Dr. Filisky specializes in adjustments of the spine, as well as elbows, wrists, hands, hips, knees and feet to help get patients back to activity.

He advises that nutrition, hydration, exercise and stretching workouts, getting adequate sleep and avoiding stress can prevent future injuries and help rehabilitate existing ones.

For instance, recent studies point to the connection between hydration and spinal health.

“Our bodies are upwards of 70% water, and the discs within the spine are also mostly water,” he says. “If a patient is dehydrated, the spinal discs will likewise not be fully hydrated and stay in a compressed state, not filling up with water, which can cause pain and potential for injury.”

He says drinking plain water every day is the best way to stay hydrated, and the optimum number to shoot for is to drink half your body weight in ounces.

No matter the age or demographic of his patients, Dr. Filisky finds out how back or neck pain or headaches might be limiting a patient’s enjoyment of life (gardening, walking, playing with kids) and comes up with a treatment plan to get patients back to doing what they love.

For athletes, he can also boost sports performance and recovery by improving range of motion and alignment.
