Coronavirus may have canceled or postponed major league sports, but one all-American pastime has weathered the restrictions. Golf is alive and well in Northeast Ohio.

“We’re actually seeing an increase in rounds,” says Nick Gustin, head PGA golf professional at Lake Metroparks’ Erie Shores Golf Course in Madison.

“It’s funny, I think because the PGA tour events are really the only major sport to follow right now, non-golfers missing other sports are getting into the game more than ever. The fan interest is growing.”

He also notes that with lots of people not going into the office and working on their own schedules, they’ve seen an uptick in players who are new to the sport—and they’re loving it.

For beginners or low handicappers, there’s no better course in the area than Erie Shores. It offers a scenic panorama of 190 rolling acres that are preserved for both golfers and wildlife to share. In fact, it is designated as a backyard wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation.

“Our 18-hole course boasts plush fairways, manicured greens and continuous cart paths,” says Nick, who notes they are running socially distanced league play and some instruction as well. Adjacent to the course is a clubhouse, patio and pavilion, as well as driving range, outdoor skills center and fully stocked pro shop.

To make the call to the links even more inviting, Nick says they offer a special for seniors every Tuesday through Friday. The cost for 18 holes with a cart is only $21, and for folks who want to play after 2 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, that cost is $25.

Erie Shores Golf Course is in compliance with the guidelines ordered by the Governor’s office and local health officials and has taken extra steps to ensure player safety, including social distancing, sanitizing, providing no-touch golf, a to-go only food and beverage operation and strict rules about entering the clubhouse.

Erie Shores Golf Course is located at 7298 Lake Road E., in Madison. Daily specials run now through Wednesday, September 30. Call 440-428-3164 or visit LakeMetroparks.com/parks-trails/erie-shores-golf-course for more information.
