Wth summer’s long-in-coming return, folks are reawakening and at last seeing their homes in the sunshine. As you throw open those windows and spring clean yourself silly chasing scuttling dust bunnies and elusive ceiling cobwebs, why not take the renewal a step further and ponder a freshening of your living space?
Monica Guhde-Rosa and Shawn Rosa, of Guhde Flooring America, have just returned from The International Surface Event (TISE) held in Las Vegas. This mother of all international trade shows is the leading event for companies to showcase their newest introductions and technological advancements in the flooring, stone and tile industries.
“In addition to an astounding lineup of manufacturers’ booths, there are demonstrations, product introductions and educational seminars,” says Shawn. “We also learn a lot from other dealers around the country.”

European Splendor
In floor tiles, highly detailed, brightly colored patterns are hot, hot, hot.
“From retro, European-inspired baroque to geometric and florals, even art deco, these eye-catching decorative designs draw the eye downward for big impact,” she says.
Where Zig meets Zag
Herringbone designs are all the rage, both in tiles and hardwood flooring. The look works with any style and can make a room look bigger by adding directional interest.
Did we Mention Dimension?
“Three-dimensional wall effects are popular, and at the show we discovered really large format patterns such as waves within 12” by 24” tiles,” he says.
Having Your Cake
“A new technique of topping a waterproof core flooring with a thin layer of hardwood veneer lends the visual appeal of real hardwoods with the water resistance of a vinyl,” she says.
