Is there any sporting event more sacred than The Ohio State vs. Michigan football game?

For Sarah and Jeremy Kinches of Mentor, hosting their annual OSU game party on Thanksgiving weekend is one of the many reasons they needed to finish their basement by last November.

“We do so much entertaining, and wanted the space to serve several functions,” says Sarah. “Both of us have backgrounds tending bar and like to collect fine liquors, so we knew creating a special focal space for the bar was important.”

The Kinches were familiar with the remodels they’d seen by Guhde Flooring America. They sat down with Shawn and Monica Rosa—the dynamic design duo—to go over their ideas.

Together, the four of them took 600 square feet of concrete and cinder block to a magazine-cover-worthy lower level that is at once comfy-cozy and upscale elegant.

“Our bar takes up most of the back wall and seats six comfortably,” says Jeremy.

“Behind the bar, we opted for open shelving supported by exposed industrial pipes and chose angled can lighting to put a spotlight on the liquors we’ve collected over the years. We also installed a flat screen TV over the back of the bar, so people can watch the game there or in the living room space.”

Form follows function here, with an oversized rectangular sink, built-in wine rack, wine cooler, and mini refrigerator.

“For the flooring, we picked the same distressed vinyl plank that was in the 2017 Lake County Dream House,” says Sarah.

“It displays several shades of grays and browns. And to offset the earthy tones, we chose a sleek, ivory/gray quartz for the countertops.”

“The process was never overwhelming,” says Sarah. “They made it a real pleasure.”
