Balloons, blinds, cascades, cornices, swags, shades and shutters. There is an astonishing variety of ways to dress your windows. It’s enough to make you want to leave them naked. But that would look terrible.

“Each window treatment is an expression of the homeowner’s individual style and taste,” says Eileen Zimmerman, owner of Well Dressed Windows.

When working with clients, she begins by asking them to send her photos of their home. From those, she commences the design process by deciding what style personality the client has.

“First, I look at the furniture,” she explains. “If it has clean lines and modular shapes, I start thinking about modern style. If it’s tufted or fringed, I know they are more traditional. Then I look at colors. Do they favor monochromatics and neutrals, muted pastels, or bold, bright shades?”

What’s Your Home Décor Style?
Eileen says there are simple indicators to decipher your style. Take this quick quiz to find out your own style personality.

The predominant colors in your current living space are:
A) Burgundy, hunter green, navy
B) Black, white and gray
C) Earth tones
D) Grays, pale pink, champagne, metallics
E) Bright red, purple, indigo

Your dream vacation would be:
A) Golf at St. Andrews, Scotland, and finally breaking par
B) Barcelona for a tour of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao
C) A rustic log cabin in the mountains with plenty of hiking
D) A New York City penthouse with tickets to a Broadway show
E) Backpacking across Nepal in search of lost civilizations

Your favorite meal is:
A) Meat loaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, red wine
B) Sushi with a crisp martini
C) Chargrilled steaks, baked potatoes, beer
D) Caviar blinis and foie gras with champagne
E) Pad Thai with a ginger-carrot-infused cocktail

If you answered all or mostly As, your style swings classic/traditional. That means you’re comfortable with plaids, checks and stripes.

If you checked off mostly Bs, consider yourself a lover of all that’s modern/contemporary. Eileen says that means clean, simple lines, straight-hanging side panels and blinds.

If you identified with the most Cs, your style is rustic. You’ll like nubby textures in earthy shades, even leather.

If Ds are your thing, glam is your style. Fabrics with sheen and metallic elements bring your dream space to life.

If Es took your fancy, your décor personality is global. Bold, ethnic prints reflect the world adventurer in you.

“Many people don’t fall into a single category, and I design transitional looks that reflect more than one style,” says Eileen. “In general, over the past several years people are opting for simpler, more tailored silhouettes that are less fussy than in the past.”

Whatever your style, why not let a professional bring it to life?
