Everyone spring cleans this time of year: Is doing it yourself is good enough?

Imagine how much better you could clean if there were three or four of you. Better yet, call The Maids for three or four professionals.

Recently I have been recovering from an injury, and a good friend has been kind enough to help me get around and do some of the things I temporarily cannot. She has been a nurse for many years, and years before that Sarah worked part-time as a maid while attending school.

DIY Cleaning vs. Professional Cleaning
Sarah and I share a number of preferences and opinions, especially a common dislike for dirt, grime and worse—stickiness. I suppose that partially motivated her to choose maid work when she was in school and for me to occasionally write about companies that thrive by specializing in cleaning our residences.

While I’m working, she will “find a project,” which translates to cleaning the daylights out of some area of the house that normally doesn’t get cleaned.

I commented about a dusty cobweb in the corner of the upstairs bathroom that never gets used, let alone cleaned. She had seen it too and agreed it was bugging her as well. So, she went ahead and cleaned the entire room. Calling me for an inspection, her face—like all of the porcelain—was just glowing. The whole room smelled just wonderful.

And then we both saw it at the same time: The cobweb remained proudly clinging to the corner, celebrating having survived Sarah’s cleaning assault.

Her embarrassment was palpable and her sigh was sad yet telling.

“I’m sorry. I’m afraid I have hit the point where I don’t see or smell things the way I used to,” she said. “And my passion for cleaning seems to have diminished with the distractions of the constant texts and calls I get these days.”

I told her it looked great and not to worry. She responded, “I’m not worried. I just realized that I can’t clean like I used to. I think I need to leave the cleaning chores to someone younger who cleans for a living.”

This experience further validated my opinions about employing a professional maid service.

Spring Clean vs. Deep Clean
When you think about it, the tradition of spring cleaning makes perfect sense. Viral bacteria from your uncle’s case of the flu when he last visited may very well be breeding in your guest bathroom. That wet mess on your dog’s paws from parading through the house after coming back inside is a surefire way to spread germs in your home from outdoors that you don’t even want to think about. You might have thought that all of the knobs and surfaces you touched when you last had a cold were disinfected afterward, but now you’re not so sure.

All of the scenarios above and many more are good enough reasons for a spring cleaning of your home. But a simple cleaning might not be enough. A deep clean to your home may be just what you need.

Consider that elderly people, as well as young, busy people, are likely to skip surfaces that should be disinfected while they are cleaning. It is not intentional, but between interruptions and distractions that are bound to occur, it’s easy to say, “I’ll get back to that spot later.” When, in reality, it is long forgotten and never happens. In turn, every time a spot is missed that should have been thoroughly disinfected, an area where bacteria will continue to flourish has been created.
