Masks and gloves are the order of the day, and, they serve a purpose. Nigel Brayer, DC, FIAMA, DIAMA, of Living Tree Center for Healing, reports there are many things people can do to boost their immune system.

“We should remember that Covid-19 is a virus similar to the cold or flu. They are all transmitted the same way,” he says.

“Just as important as social distancing is making sure your body can stave off the virus if you are exposed. I hope people understand that there’s much within their power on a daily basis to foster a healthy immune system.”

Here are his top four tips:

  1. Destress. “Anxiety, fear and panic are major suppressors of the immune system. Limit your exposure to television and media as these tend to feed our fear.”
  2. Head outside. “I recommend you get outside and enjoy the sunshine, which promotes vitamin D production, a big immune booster, at least an hour a day.”
  3. Get moving. “Being sedentary reduces blood flow and puts strain on the heart and other organs. Staying active an hour a day strengthens the immune system. Hunkering down in an indoor cave is the worst thing you can do. Try walking, cycling, even running up and down the stairs in your home.”
  4. Eat clean and drink up. “The pastas, potatoes and comfort foods you might be craving right now will actually turn to simple sugars in the body, making you lethargic and more prone to storing fat. Load up on vitamin powerhouses like fresh fruits, veggies and lean proteins. Staying hydrated is also important. I recommend people drink half their body weight in ounces daily.”
