Beyond the burn...and itch

Most people don’t know there are many different symptoms that can be caused by hemorrhoids. Typically we associate the presence of hemorrhoids with itching and burning, but symptoms can include a number of other things, too. 

Aside from the burn and itch, another common indicator is an inability to get clean after bowel movements. You may wipe, wipe and wipe but still not get clean. 

You might even find it’s difficult to stay clean because you’re experiencing leakage. The leakage may consist of stool, mucous, and may even be tinged with blood.

I have some patients who have experienced bleeding so profuse they have filled the toilet with blood, or have worn a pad to get through the day. Internal hemorrhoids may sometimes become so large they drop down and protrude externally with each bowel movement. 

It’s a common misconception that you have to “see” something to know you have hemorrhoids. You can easily experience symptoms without any external evidence, because it is generally the internal hemorrhoids causing the symptoms. 

Anal fissures, fistulas, abscesses and cancer can all mimic the symptoms of hemorrhoids, so it’s a good idea to get checked to rule out something more serious.
