Celebrating its 35th anniversary this month, Cory’s Hair Studio & Day Spa has flourished over the years by always staying at the forefront of beauty trends.

When the salon opened in 1984 inside the Holiday Inn in Middleburg Heights, big hair was all the rage. The high-volume bouffant was glamorized by stars like Joan Collins on the hit show Dynasty. And actress Jane Seymour sported a perm, showing how easy it was for everyone to add volume to their hairstyle. Even men liked the volume, sporting tall mullet-style mohawks.

One of Cory’s long-time clients, Barbara Maynard, remembers her own evolution of hairstyles.

“I embraced the big hairstyle when I first started to go to Cory’s and have evolved along with fashion trends over the past three decades,” says Barbara, who now has a modern shag hairstyle. “I also have had different hair color over the years, ranging from a subtle purplish eggplant color to reddish brown to now blonde.”

“I have been going to Cory’s since they opened 35 years ago and have never gone elsewhere because everyone is so friendly here and caters to you,” says Barbara, noting her daughter Ellen also is a regular client.

“It’s really like a big family, and I wouldn’t think of going anywhere else.”

And that family has grown over the years. When Corinne Calabro opened her eponymous salon, there were just two hairstylists. Today, there are 20-plus staff members, including hairstylists, manicurists, estheticians and massage therapists.

Many of the stylists have been working here for decades, including Wendy Quesenberry, the salon manager who started working at the salon straight out of beauty school and now oversees the operation.

Cory’s quickly outgrew its space inside the Holiday Inn and moved to its current location near the corner of Pearl and Bagley roads 30 years ago. And in 2007, it added a day spa, doubling its space and adding dozens of new services.

“We added a day spa to give our clients more opportunities to relax and feel good about themselves,” says Corinne.

The extensive spa menu features more than a dozen massages, including Himalayan Salt Stone Massage Therapy and a Champagne Scrub with Massage, and body treatments, such as the Moor Mud Body Wrap and Wine Wrap. And for that something different, the delectable Chocolate Sensations pamper you from head to toe with treatments ranging from a Chocolate Soufflé Facial to a Chocolate Mousse Body Wrap to a Hot Chocolate Pedicure.

“I’ve done it all,” comments Barbara. “I’ve had manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. My favorite spa treatment is the lavender pedicure because it is so pampering.”

Cory’s Hair Studio & Day Spa also can accommodate mothers and daughters for a day at the spa, couples for massages, and wedding parties to help the bride and bridesmaids get ready for the big day.

Cory’s is located on Pearl Road near the corner of Bagley Road. The salon and spa are uniquely open seven days a week.

“It is our goal to make all of our clients feel honored, pampered and relaxed when they come here for any hair service or spa treatment,” says Corinne. “It has been an honor and pleasure to serve the community for the past 35 years.”
