It all started in 1905.

And after over 100 years of success in the small town of Sterling, Ohio, Maibach’s Home Furnishings president James Maibach brought the family’s legendary design services and exciting collection of home furnishings to Medina.

Renowned international store designer Connie Post handled the showroom layout—including an architectural design that pays particular attention to elements like traffic flow—and Larisa Maibach, James’ talented sister-in-law, continues the interior design and inventory placement.

Maibach’s 21,000 square foot store is packed with higher quality, name brand furniture—including many locally crafted pieces—but Maibach’s is about more than selling you a piece of furniture.

“Developing a design plan for your space is essential,” James says. “Whether you’re looking for one piece of furniture or an entire roomful, it helps to know where you’re going with the overall design, and how it fits with the rest of your home.”

In terms of pricing, Maibach’s has the same emphasis it did in 1905—value and service.

“We’re not the highest priced and we’re not the lowest,” James explains. “But we absolutely offer the best value.  And you are not a number here. We’re not just trying to move sofas out the door. We listen and we want to help you create the look that’s right for you and your home.”

Also at Maibach’s Home Furnishings, you’ll also meet thirty-year-plus veteran designer and industry insider Dave Lecher.

Here are a few furniture buying secrets David revealed for Mimi:

1. Study Your Lifestyle: Before you begin the shopping process, study your lifestyle and consider who uses the room, how it is used, and how often you use it. For color inspiration, take a look in your closet. The color hanging there are ones you are most comfortable with.

2. Take Your Time: Avoid making an impulse decision. Chance are a fabulous “offer” will be available again, so take time to consider the size, design, and price, as well as the reputation of the furniture manufacturer and the retailer.

3. Measure Your Space: Always take your measuring tape with you. It may also be helpful to have your room dimensions handy when shopping.

4. Avoid Too Much Advice:
Avoid gathering too many opinions when you are making your furniture decisions. Input from a good friend with an eye for design may be helpful, but asking too many people what they think may just lead to confusion.

5. Shop During the Week:
Weekends are great for initial browsing and gathering ideas, but when you are ready to seriously explore the possibilities, the furniture store staff will be able to spend more quality time with you for your questions on weekday mornings and evenings.
