School’s almost out, but kids still need to keep their skills sharp. Signing your kids up for summer sports leagues and summer camps can keep them in the game from the end of one school year to the start of the next.

Structured play provides children with an opportunity to hone their skills and have fun. Structured play is any fun, goal-oriented activity that enhances either physical or mental development. Unlike free play, structured play is moderated. Teachers, coaches and camp counselors guide activities and then ask, “What did you learn?”

Structured play encourages children to set goals, reflect, reassess and persevere.  Structured play often takes shape in team sports. Summer T-ball leagues get the ball rolling by improving communication and cooperation.

Parents can sign their kids up for the YWCA/Stony Hill/Gift Exchange T-ball program. The non-competitive league is for children ages three to seven. Games are held Sunday afternoons, June 11 to July 30, at the Church at Stony Hill in Medina.

Another program at the Church at Stony Hill—summer camp—showcases the boundless opportunities for structured play to enhance socialization and cooperation. Starting the week of June 26 and through the week August 4, Stony Hill will host five week-long day camps, each centered on a different theme: Cooking Week, Art Week, Passport Week, Science Week and Sports Week.

Cooking sharpens listening skills. Art channels children’s emotional energy. Passport Week enlarges children’s perspectives. The intellect percolates during Science Week. Sports Week overcomes children’s short attention spans. Children ages five to 12 can participate in one or all of these opportunities and the skills children learn carry over from week to week.

With structured play, kids learn to set goals, reflect, reassesses and persevere—all while having fun.

T-ball and summer camp registration is open at ChurchAtStonyHill.com. The Church at Stony Hill is located at 2756 Stony Hill Road in Medina. The phone number is 330-239-9858.
