On the road to retirement, day in and day out, we eagerly inch closer to our reward for our life’s work. We dream of retirement as a time to relax or reinvent ourselves. When we get there, and the day comes when we can finally chuck that early morning alarm clock, reality sets in.

Now what?

The road ahead may look empty, particularly as we continue to live longer lives well past the age of retirement. We should forge ahead, and remember retirement is our time to rediscover our mind, body and spirit.

We’ve all heard it’s not the destination; it’s the journey. So let’s be there for i ...

Trying to understand insurance coverage can be a lot like a visit to the dentist. Painful.

One of the biggest things I do is help clients navigate the complex waters of the insurance industry, particularly Medicare, and take the pain out of the process.

Open enrollment for Medicare is over, but I meet with people all year long to help them understand their coverage options. I can show you the moving parts and pieces of your Medicare plan and how to manage some of the costs.

People just turning 65 are often overwhelmed by the idea of Medicare and don’t know where to begin. New 65s have a seven-month e ...

By Dr. David Gutman, Advanced Hemorrhoid Specialists

“Hey, doc,” said my last new patient of the day. “Let me tell you, my hemorrhoids are a real pain in the butt.”

“Ha, good one,” I laughed...for the sixth time that day.

Having just celebrated our 10th anniversary as “the hemorrhoid place” in Northeast Ohio, I have seen and heard them all, from messages written in ink on the posterior canvas—“Caution! Work area!”—to patients affectionately naming their needless nuisances “Larry, Moe and Curly.”

I assure you, the humor in my profession knows no bounds.

I remember t ...

For some women, hot flashes and night sweats are infrequent and manageable. But for others, they are a major obstacle to daily living—forcing sufferers to endure as many as 20 episodes per day.

With this in mind, I want to revisit the herb that has been by far our most successful supplement for countless women, giving them relief in as little as seven days. It’s called pueraria mirifica (PM for short).

According to research, PM contains a complex of phytoestrogens, including one called miroestrol, that can effectively relieve menopausal symptoms. However, unlike the phytoestrogens from red clover, soy an ...

The ultimate gift of love

I remember the day they wheeled my husband, Rick, back to the operating room. After suffering a heart attack, we rushed him to the hospital where they prepped him for surgery. He was just 49.

The last words he said to me before they took him back were, “Do you know where the life insurance policies are?” His concern was not for himself but for me and our children, and he felt good that as a provider in our family that he’d taken care of us.

Rick is now recovered and back at home, a gift for which we are thankful each and every day.

I regularly hear stories about people who are unprepared for th ...

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. The good news is, heart disease can often be prevented with a combination of nutrition and lifestyle management.

From a nutritional perspective, nature has provided us with a variety of heart healthy remedies: turmeric and ginger to combat silent inflammation, fish oil for healthy triglycerides, celery and magnesium to support healthy blood pressure and the subject of today’s article, red yeast rice extract, for healthy cholesterol.

Integrative medicine expert Andrew Weil, MD, states, “Of all the natural supple ...

Treating the "other" cavity

Hemorrhoids can be like a toothache. The pain might not be extreme at first, but it’s still bothersome. You treat the toothache with something like Tylenol, hoping the problem will somehow magically heal itself. Once the medication wears off, the toothache is still there, only now the nerve is throbbing and pressure around the root is building. You can continue to try to mask the symptoms of a cavity, but a visit to the dentist is most assuredly in your future.

Hemorrhoids are kind of the same way.

The pain, itch and bleeding associated with a hemorrhoid might not be extreme at first, but it&rsquo ...

Not your grandpa’s treatment

Recently a patient visited my office who told me she’d been afraid. Afraid that treatment for her hemorrhoids would be painful and require a lengthy recovery. She recalled a family member who, years ago, had undergone surgery for hemorrhoids—and that it was a horrible experience.

Traditionally, surgery meant cutting hemorrhoids out, stitches and recovery times lasting four to six weeks at home in miserable pain. Bowel movements felt like razor blades in the rectum. Surprisingly, many doctors still turn to surgery as a solution.

Because I’ve specialized in the treatment of hemorrhoids for most of ...

Summer is full of fun outdoor activities, cookouts and increased exercise. But if you are prone to painful gout attacks, summer can also mean an increased risk of an attack.

Gout is one of the most painful forms of arthritis. Symptoms usually occur without warning and include intense joint pain, inflammation and redness lasting anywhere from days to weeks. It usually affects the big toe, but can occur in other parts of the body.

This painful condition is often diet related. The main culprit is an unhealthy build-up of uric acid that forms crystals in the joint tissue. Uric acid is a by-product of purine metabolism. ...

How will your family live without you?

Unless you’ve experienced personal loss, I know the chances of you taking the time to seriously think about life insurance are slim. And if you’re younger, you probably think the world is still your oyster—and that you’ve got plenty of time left to live.

But during a free review with me, I’m going to ask you about your hopes for the future, your family and your business if you have one. I’m going to expose your risks and ask you to focus on them right now, instead of when a crisis strikes. Asking a person to get in touch with his or her own mortality is difficult, but during our talk I&rsq ...
