You don’t have to travel to New York, Chicago, Austin, or Nashville to hear top-flight entertainment. It’s right here in your backyard in Northeast Ohio. Our home-grown singer/songwriters performing original music have been gaining a loyal following over the past several years, with some lauded major national exposure. The quality of their work has been that good. So who is the next local favorite you need to seek out?

Rachel Brown has a voice that will make you think you’re not in Cleveland anymore. By day, the Medina native teaches music and choir at an Elyria middle school. But the dream of performing has never left her since she first ...

Minkin's Music: Brent Kirby Carries t...

So Cleveland’s rock ‘n roll heroes are singer/songwriters who have performed their craft at local clubs and watering holes, creating great musical moments. Some have gone on to receive national critical acclaim while others have remained only part of our lakefront folklore. The torch seems to have been passed to Brent Kirby, who earlier this year released his latest record, Coming Back To Life, that is worthy of national exposure.
After losing a knife fight with an avocado that put his left hand in a cast for a month, Brent Kirby wrote 13 songs that reflected his perseverance and commitment to being a full-time musician. With the help of his backing band, The Lost ...

Minkin's Music: Kasey Chambers an Aus...

So how far will I go to buy music? Well, I’ve ordered albums from a store called Rocking Horse Records in Brisbane, Australia more than once to obtain new releases from that country’s favorite daughter, Kasey Chambers, and her husband, Shane Nicholson.  Thankfully, one of Kasey’s two releases is available in the US and Little Bird just might be her finest recording effort to date.
Kasey Chambers mixes pop, country, outlaw and bluegrass with a very distinctive, sweet vocal that is her signature. She began her solo career in 1999 with singles “The Captain” and “Cry Like A Baby” reaching America via radio stations and television soundtracks like T ...

There are so many things to do in the fall, but my family and I always look forward to the Halloween Bonfire at Plum Creek Park in Brunswick. Nothing gets me in the fall spirit and Halloween mood quite like this event.
We have attended the last three years and have not been disappointed yet.  I am always surprised by how much there is to do!
My daughters love to dress in costume and go on the hayride through the woods.  Afterwards, we grab cups of hot chocolate and bags of popcorn and admire everyone's uniquely carved pumpkins.  The girls also get excited about the face painting station and participating in the storytelling session.
I l ...

By Jay Minkin9/22/11It's been a good year so far, as many of my favorite record releases have coincided with a band tour to our area, including Over The Rhine, John Langford, and The Decemberists. But the big showof the year could be when Fleet Foxes plays Cleveland’s Masonic Auditorium on Wednesday, September 28. Touring behind their second full length record, this is the one I’ve been waiting for since purchasing the band’s self-titled debut at Amoeba Records in San Francisco. (Yes, I go to great lengths to get my music.)School chums Skyler Skjelset and Robin Pecknold formed the band in Seattle and started receiving some love playing around town. As time went on, lead sin ...

Minkin's Music: Where Rainbows Never Die

by JayMinkin8/19/11If you take some tight new-style bluegrass music and mix it with a heavy dose of Lynyrd Skynyrd vocal accompaniment, you kind of end up with the sound of The SteelDrivers, who will be performing at The Beachland Ballroom on Saturday, August 20. The band is touring behind their 2010 Grammy nominated album “Reckless,” which was honored for Best Bluegrass Album and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group for the song Where Rainbows Never Die.The SteelDrivers are a highly regarded group of distinguished songsmiths and session-playing veterans that came together after playing in the studio or on tour with an eclectic group of headlining artists. Minkin's Music: Marti Jones is rock r...

By Jay MinkinWhen discussing rock ‘n roll bloodlines, Northeast Ohio can claim its own version of the Royal Family. Marti Jones is a singer and painter originally from Uniontown, Ohio. She initially was part of the Akron band Color Me Gone, which was signed by A&M Records and released one EP in 1983 before dissolving.  Jones’ career path and personal life changed when A&M arranged for Don Dixon to produce her first solo outing, “Unsophisticated Time,” in 1985. Dixon, originally from South Carolina, was fresh off co-producing R.E.M.’s landmark debut, “Murmur,” and brilliant follow- up, “Reckoning.” Jones and Dixon subsequently ...

By Jay MinkinAre you ready for an “experience” at Cain Park on Saturday, July 30? That’s when Mike Farris and The Roseland Rhythm Revue, from Nashville, will be bringing their Americana traditional gospel, soul, and blues sound to the fine folks of Cleveland. You may never have heard of this former leader of the Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies, who scored a Top 10 hit with “Shakin’ The Blues” in 1994. To tell you the truth, neither did I until one night when I was at 3rd & Lindsley, in Nashville, for a showcase that featured Peter Bradley Adams and local favorites The Coal Men.In between the two acts I came to see, the place became packed to the rafter ...

A Great Class Experience!

5/23/11
My twin daughters have taken many "enrichment classes" over their 6-year lifespan so far, some good, some bad.  For example, swim lessons at the Medina Rec Center went great.  Dance lessons, well, let's just say, not so wonderful.
Looking back I feel our experience was disappointing because of the particular teacher we had, who’s studio coincidentally closed.  So, when a friend of mine, Adrianna Hartmann, mother of three girls, told me about her daughters great experiences at their dance and music class, I wanted to share her story with other families.
Here is what she told me:

“Last fall, I started taking my then 19-month-old t ...
