By Dr. Vladimir Pastouk, Dental & Cosmetic Solutions
Q: I have heard that dental implants improve your smile and your overall health. But just what is a dental implant?
A: A dental implant is a post that replaces the natural root of the tooth. The post is made of titanium or titanium alloy, which is specifically designed to be inserted into the area of the missing tooth. Once this implant is surgically placed into the bone, the titanium integrates and fuses with the bone and creates the base for the crown to be placed over it. The new tooth fits, looks, and functions just like a natural tooth.

By Dr. Noel Abood, Solon Spine and Wellness Center
In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peer-reviewed article was published by Michael D. Martin, MD, et al, in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.
So what does that really mean to us?
It tells us that the disc itself does have the ability to heal and repair itself if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc ...

By Dr. Jeffrey Peacock, Crossroads Animal Hospital
Many first-time parents have concerns about how their pet(s) will react to a new baby in the home. Very rarely do dogs and cats react aggressively to a new baby. Instead, they are usually quite curious and want to be around the baby. In order for a smooth transition when the baby comes home, there are a few things that will help.
Be sure that you encourage your pet to get comfortable with the nursery and be a part of the process of getting it ready, even feeding the pet in the room and allowing it to sleep in there if it wants to. Pets will usually sense the change in family routine and can even be aware of ...

By Dr. David Gutman, Advanced Hemorrhoid Specialists
One of the more uncomfortable symptoms of hemorrhoids is the irritating, sometimes uncontrollable, itch. But while most people presume that itching is caused by external hemorrhoids, the reality is that internal hemorrhoids are usually the culprits.
When internal hemorrhoids become inflamed, they don’t always cause pain or bleeding. Sometimes they produce mucus, which contains histamines and other itch-inducing chemicals. The mucus finds its way to the outside skin, through gravity or a bowel movement, and is then deposited where it can cause itching. For people who suffer from hemorrhoids, this can be maddenin ...

By Mike Ventresca, Vital Choice
Do you suffer from joint pain or stiffness? If so, today’s column about a little known supplement could be just what the doctor ordered—literally.
I spoke with Dr. Douglas Kiburz, a practicing orthopedic surgeon. In the interview, he discussed how a patented form of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) is literally stealing away would-be surgical patients by greatly enhancing the health of their joints. A fact that has him thrilled.
We’ve known about HA since the 1940s. It’s essentially a fancy sugar that’s found in every cell of the body. It’s largely responsible for lubricating the joints, eyes, and ...

More than half of all adults report having experienced the uncomfortable symptoms of acid reflux at some time in their lives, and about 20% say they have symptoms at least once a week, says Suresh Mahajan, a gastroenterologist on the medical staff of Southwest General.

Mimi: Mimi is noticing that she has fine, superficial lines under her eyes, across her forehead, on her cheeks, and around her mouth. What can you do for this?

Dr. Stefanie: Excellent question. It’s best to address fine lines before they become deep creases, and there are numerous ways to get rid of these pesky reminders of forgotten sunscreen and other less than stellar behaviors.
TCA peels are an excellent choice for very fine lines on the cheeks and around the mouth. These peels usually result in flaking 3-4 days after the peel.
Laser Genesis is an ideal treatment for fine lines, especially if they are associated with enlarged pores.
Botox is best for f ...

By Dr. Chrys Constantinou, Westlake Dental Associates
Modern dental implants are arguably one of the most significant advancements in the history of dentistry. The engineering and design of the materials is constantly improving, and the technique of proper placement and healing gains scientific evidence every day. But what exactly are dental implants and who is a candidate?
For now, most dental implants are a medical-grade titanium alloy “screw” or “post” that have the ability to integrate into the jawbone just like artificial knees, hips, etc. Once an implant is properly integrated, it can be used to support a single tooth. Multiple implants al ...
