Who’s handling your produce?

Not all produce is created equal, which is why it’s important to know where and how food has been handled prior to landing a spot on your kitchen table.
Marc’s produce vice president Mike Tomko says a lot of grocery stores get their produce from a middleman. And while that reduces some work on the part of the store, buying from a broker certainly has its downfalls. “The problem is that produce from a broker isn’t typically the best on the market. They rarely offer the best of the best in the business,” Mike says.
Marc’s eliminates the middleman by operating its own 100,000-square-foot dist ...

With many musical events on the calendar, it’s hard to give you the lowdown on just one. So it’s with great excitement and pleasure that I let all my little hipsters know that Alejandro Escovedo will be making two Northeast Ohio visits that should be on your radar.
For those not familiar with his work, the singer/songwriter from Austin, Texas has been on the music scene since the late seventies as a guitarist with punk band The Nuns. The road took Escovedo to San Francisco and New York City to find fame and fortune before returning home to play with alt-country roots rocker bands Rank & File and The True Believers. By 1992, Escovedo finally fou ...

By Jeffrey Peacock, DVM; Crossroads Animal Hospital
Obesity is at epidemic proportions in people, and, unfortunately, in our pets. All of the risks associated with excess weight in people apply to pets: cancer, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and shortened life span. Although there are sometimes hormonal causes for obesity, the main reasons are too much food and too little exercise.
What can be done about pet obesity? Let’s start with prevention. Most pet foods are well balanced and have all the nutrition your pet needs. Although most foods have feeding instructions, they are usually in amounts higher than your pet requires. In most cases you should feed 10-1 ...

By Mike Ventresca, Vital Choice Healthstore
It’s no secret that successfully losing weight and keeping it off can be a difficult task. What is a secret, or at least a lesser-known fact, is that without adequate protein in your diet, you may be spinning your weight loss wheels.
According to Vital Choice in-store registered dietitian Nicole Gould, “Studies show that consuming at least 70 grams of protein each day maximizes weight loss efforts.”
That’s right.
According to research, there appears to be a line in the sand for someone trying to lose weight. Regardless of your other efforts, if you consume less than 70 grams of prote ...

By Drs. Colleen Vienna and Amber Bizga, Vienna Dental Group
We’re not only in the midst of flu season, but canker and cold sores also peak during the winter months as the common cold, emotional stress, and exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger these sores on your lips and inside your mouth. While you can’t get a shot to prevent this virus, at Vienna Dental & Aesthetics we use lasers to treat these sores and provide immediate pain relief.
The same Biolase dental lasers that allow us to remove tooth decay and fill cavities without the need for anesthetics also treat cold sores and canker sores on your lips, tongue, inner cheeks, and gums. While the ...

By Noel Abood, DC; Solon Spine & Wellness Center
Hello, I’m Noel Abood, DC, owner of Solon Spine and Wellness Center. I have been in practice since 1984 and have worked extensively with back pain sufferers.
In the past when patients complained about back and leg pain due to disc injuries and spinal stenosis, it presented a challenge. Treatment options were limited. These patients were given prescriptions for bed rest, painkillers, and muscle relaxers, which altered their abilities to function and or think clearly. Then, as a last resort, spinal surgery was introduced as a solution.
In 2003 I heard about a relatively new procedure available that not ...

By Ken McEntee, Contributing Writer
Sunken or uneven concrete can be more than an eyesore or an inconvenience. It can also be unsafe and create liability issues. Fortunately, correcting problem sidewalks, driveways, and patios doesn’t have to be an expensive or messy process, insists Vince Cabot, owner of Accurate Concrete Leveling, in Strongsville.
“Concrete leveling can solve the problem for as little as a third of the cost of replacement,” Vince assures. “Many problems can be corrected for less than $300.”
Concrete leveling, Vince says, can be used on public and private sidewalks, driveways, and patios—even interior home slabs ...
