By David Gutman, MD

Q: I had a baby last year and am considering a second. While pregnant I developed hemorrhoids and am wondering if I should have them treated now or wait until after the next baby?—Kim S., Richfield

About half of all pregnant women will develop hemorrhoids, either during pregnancy or at the time of delivery. Hormonal changes, an increase in bodily fluid retention and the fetus pressing against your veins can all be contributing factors. Constipation or irregular bowel movements can get worse at the time of delivery, also resulting in the appearance of hemorrhoids.

Sometimes hemorrhoids will seem to go away by themselves, but this relief is ...

Do You Have Direction?

A lead article in the Wall Street Journal this week states that fees for investment advice at some of the largest brokerage firms are going up. At the same time, new clients are telling me that their former advisors are not providing comprehensive financial advice—some are not contacting clients at all. This does not seem to me to be good value for the money.

Let’s be blunt: If you are going to pay a professional advisor to provide you with advice to improve your family’s financial situation, shouldn’t you expect holistic, comprehensive financial advice? You should expect that the value of the advice given exceeds the value of the do ...

The Streets of New York

It’s okay in my book if you come late to the party, just as long as you eventually get there. Like me, you most likely have a laundry list of artists that you didn’t get exposed to until a little further along in their careers. For me, Willie Nile is one of those singer/songwriters that never flew into my radar until 2006, with his brilliant Streets of New York album that came just about 26 years after his debut. Ouch!

Like a fine wine, some artists seem to get better and more prolific with age as Nile’s resume can attest, with House of A Thousand Guitars (2009) and The Innocent Ones (2010). So for those of you still not familiar with his son ...

Many people consider themselves to be collectors. Stamps, books and art are often the passions of those who collect. Oftentimes these items are worth far more than they appear to be because of their rarity, or because the demand for them is so great.

So, do we call a person that acquires a large number of pets a collector? In fact, we don’t. The definition of this type of person is “hoarder.” Animal hoarding is a human behavior that involves the keeping of a high number of animals as pets without having the ability to properly house or care for them.

It is not uncommon for an animal hoarder to deny his or her inability to manag ...

Can a Remodel Really be Green?

Q: I want to make my kitchen remodel as “green” as possible. Is there a way to be conscious of our environment and still remodel affordably? —Neil C., Bay Village

A: Absolutely. One of the reasons we recommend Haas Cabinets is because we believe in the company philosophy when it comes to environmental consciousness. Its dedication to the environment is probably very similar to yours: Try to be “thrifty” with purchases, use every bit of what is bought, and dispose of the remains in the best way possible.

One of the reasons so many cabinet and furniture manufacturers began in the Ohio Valley is the abundance of American ha ...

The Pain-Free Root Canal

In last month’s column we featured our new Biolase dental lasers and how we can treat cavities without using anesthetics. Several readers called the office asking for more information about how this works because they, like many patients, are anxious when they go to the dentist and don’t like to get numbed and hear the grinding drill.

We are embracing this new technology because it reduces pain and is ultimately safer for patients. Lasers provide a more conservative approach that removes less tooth structure and causes less microfractures that can occur with regular drilling. Plus, our patients love it because we don’t have to use ...

It’s no secret that successfully losing weight and keeping it off can be a difficult task. What is a secret, or at least a lesser known fact, is that without adequate protein in your diet, you may be spinning your weight loss wheels.

According to Vital Choice in-store registered dietitian Nicole Gould, “Studies show that consuming at least 70 grams of protein each day maximizes weight loss efforts.”

That’s right. According to research, there appears to be a line in the sand for someone trying to lose weight. Regardless of your other efforts, if you consume less than 70 grams of protein daily, you will have a hard time losin ...
