The best albums of 2013

This has been one of the most prolific years for outstanding record releases. As the cream rises to the top, here are my stocking stuffer recommendations for the music lovers on your gift list.
The ladies just killed it this year, especially local singer/songwriter Rachel Brown with Just Look My Way. Catch her performing around town with either her band, The Beatnik Playboys, or as part of the ensemble known as Hillbilly Idol. Brown’s album stands up to some of the best national record releases, including The Highway by Holly Williams, Pushin’ Against A Stone from Valerie June, and Down Fell The Doves by Amanda Shires. But the leading sweetheart this year is Kim ...

By Rebecca Bar-Shain, Cedar Brook Financial Partners
History tells us the markets will cycle down again eventually; we just don’t know exactly when. When that downturn comes, a financial plan, investment strategy, and a trusted financial advisor can make the difference between staying the course and bailing out too soon.
Not surprisingly, researchers have found that the human brain wants to be happy and will in fact bend our perceptions of reality to that end. Faced with evidence that we have made a mistake in judgment, our brain denies, rationalizes, blames, and defends, because admitting mistakes damages our self-esteem and makes us unhappy.
Faced with inve ...

Why does my bathroom remodel cost so ...

By Brent Moore, Moore Home Remodeling
Q: I’ve just received several quotes for my hall bathroom remodel. Why is it going to cost so much?  —Elizabeth C., Lakewood
A: Not knowing the size of your space, other variables are tiled tub/shower versus a tub/shower surround unit; tiled or vinyl floor; the type of tile; special order materials or stock; complete deconstruction or partial; required electrical and plumbing code upgrades and/or changes in location, or function of elements associated with both.
I can renovate a standard 8x5 bath for between $8,000 and $10,000.
Conversely, I’ve completed $60,000 master baths—and they all lo ...

The myths about hemorrhoids

By Dr. David Gutman, Advanced Hemorrhoid Solutions
Q: I’ve heard there are a number of different at-home treatments for hemorrhoids. Do any of them work? —Stephanie L., Akron
A: It’s natural to want to find a solution to hemorrhoids that doesn’t involve a visit to the doctor, and there’s enough advertising to suggest that an over-the-counter remedy is possible. But treating the symptoms relating to hemorrhoids does nothing to eliminate the problem—and can even make it worse.
Here are some examples:
Ice - Seems harmless enough, right? After all, we use it to calm a bump or bruise. But when applied to a hemorrhoid, ice can ...

By Mike Ventresca, Vital Choice Healthstore
According to the National Institutes of Health, 70 million Americans experience chronic sleep disorders and intermittent sleep problems that can significantly damage health and quality of life. In fact, lack of sleep can lead to obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and more.
What is insufficient or poor quality sleep? One factor is duration. According to the Mayo Clinic, an adult should get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. This can be tough if you can’t get to sleep or stay asleep.
Another critical factor in sleep quality is dreaming. While researchers still don’t fully understand why we dream, th ...

What are injectable fillers?

By Mimi Vanderhaven
Mimi: What are injectable fillers?
Dr. Stefanie: That is an excellent question. Fillers are used for several purposes: to replace volume, which we lose as we age—particularly in the cheeks or lips; and to fill in permanent creases, such as nasolabial folds (corners of the nostrils to the corners of the lips) or marionette lines (straight down from the mouth corners).
There are also new fillers that can be used very superficially for the shallowest creases. Fillers can even be used to contour the nose, such as smoothing a prominent bump on the bridge.
Certain products, such as Radiesse, actually build collagen and are best f ...

By Michael Brady
You are not putting enough away for retirement. There, I said it.
Somebody had to because we are in crisis mode here folks. The vast majority of Americans are not putting enough away to sustain their lifestyles after they can no longer work.
I know that there are unlimited excuses for the lack of savings: Nothing left after I pay the monthly bills, college tuition for children, home or car repairs, medical bills, taking care of parents, and more. But who will take care of you if you don’t?
If you think that the government—through the social security system—is going to take care of you, think again. The government ca ...

By Kyla Price, Contributing Writer
For Consultative Insurance Group in Middleburg Heights and South Euclid, giving back to local communities is something that’s always been in motion. Kindra Smith and her husband, Ron, used to own two separate Nationwide agencies, until a few years ago when they merged forces and formed Consultative Insurance.
As individual business owners, they participated in things like Adopt-A-Family, but now that they’ve expanded, Kindra and Ron are on a mission to do even more.
In total, Consultative Insurance has four offices, including two in South Carolina and two in Ohio. While there’s a good bit of distance between ...
