By Jay Minkin
Being regarded as the reigning voice of Americana, bluegrass, and traditional country twang in these parts, it’s the entire experience of seeing music performed live that is truly good for your soul. A bushel full of performers will be making their way to Northeastern Ohio during the very hectic summer touring schedule and many of these singer/songwriters should be on your concert bucket list.
Cain Park will be hosting The Counting Crows and their “Outlaw Road Show” on Monday, June 18. The group is touring behind Underwater Sunshine, a new CD release of favorite covers. The Carolina Chocolate Drops roll in on Thursday, July 19, fresh off this ...

Category: Health & Beauty

By Jeff Cook
Although there are exceptions,  most of our clients at Formula Fitness fall into one of two categories and, in some cases, both. Our clients are typically successful working professionals and/or mothers who have raised children and now have additional personal time available to focus on their own health.
In many cases, the one area of their lives in which they have not been successful is maintaining the level of health and fitness they desire. Although desired fitness levels vary significantly among our clients, there are a few universal effects of inadequate fitness that are easy to recognize. If you answer “yes” to two or more of the followin ...

By Drs. Vienna and Bizga
As part of our caring approach to dentistry, at the Vienna Dental Group we educate our patients on all aspects of oral health so they can take charge of their well-being. Here are some frequently asked questions.
Q. When should I brush and floss my teeth?Ideally two to three times daily. But, more practically, if you only brush once a day, you should brush before bedtime so the plaque and bacteria don’t remain in your mouth for the six to eight hours you are asleep.
Q. Who is a good candidate for a dental implant?Anyone who is missing or about to lose a tooth would benefit from a dental implant. Implants can replace one or more teeth, ...

You Have the Right to Choose

By Tricia Schaum
Everyone has the right to choose how he or she wants to be cared for. But when the time comes, most of us are not prepared because we don’t know what our options are.
I started Seasons of Care, a Medicare Certified Home Care Company, nine years ago for very personal reasons. My family began its journey into home care over 30 years ago because my mother suffered from multiple sclerosis.
Like most families, we did not know about home care, let alone what questions to ask. Every week people call Seasons of Care because their lives are turned upside down due to a drastic change in their parents’ health.
Mom and Dad can be enjoying ...

Rescue Tales!

By Georjette Thomas
Looking at life through the eyes of a dog is much like looking at life through the eyes of a child. Their every need is managed by the “pet parent.” Feedings are dependent upon us. Potty training requires our commitment. Exercise means that we have to move, too. And, when they’re sick or in pain, we make the decision to seek medical attention.
Sweet Isaac, a purebred Cocker Spaniel, arrived at the shelter full bodied with a beautiful coat of fur, but in extreme pain. Because his pet parents didn’t recognize that he was in distress, they didn’t seek the medical attention Isaac needed and deserved.
After immediate eva ...

Hot Flashes and Menopause

By Mike Ventresca
For decades, countless women have successfully used the herb black cohosh to help alleviate hot flashes, mood swings and other symptoms associated with the years leading up to menopause. Recently, several studies have questioned the effectiveness of black cohosh. While experts caution this latest research needs to be confirmed, it would seem to explain the “hit or miss” nature I’ve noticed with black cohosh, where one woman finds it a great help yet another doesn’t.
Thankfully, women may have a better natural option that can relieve symptoms in as little as seven days. It’s called pueraria mirifica (PM for short). According to ...

Yike! Stop Wasps Now

by on 06/13/2012 - 01:37 pm
Category: Health & Beauty

By Gary Jones
Right now most bee and wasp nests are about the size of a golf ball, but with these stinging insects working 24/7, nests can quickly grow to the size of a basketball. It happens because most people do not generally walk around their property looking up, and few homeowners have the time to inspect their property every few days. As a result, nests can grow very large—and dangerous—before being noticed.
The best thing you can do right now to protect your family is to perform some basic preventive maintenance with a structural power spray. Different from a power wash, a structural power spray destroys existing nests, discourages the building of new nes ...

Pregnancy and Massage?

by on 06/11/2012 - 04:37 pm
Category: Health & Beauty

By Natalie Rumbaugh
I have many women who are or become pregnant ask me if it’s safe to get a massage.
As long as you are in good health (and your doctor approves), there is no reason why you can’t continue enjoying massage therapy throughout your entire pregnancy. However, it is important to seek care from a Licensed Massage Therapist who is certified in prenatal massage. Therapists certified in prenatal massage have received training beyond the state standards and can address specific pregnancy needs.
Massage therapy can be incorporated into your routine prenatal care as an emotional and physical health supplement proven to improve pregnancy outcome ...

By Karin Shulin
Jezi was living a hard-knocks life out on the streets when she was picked up as a stray by Cleveland Animal Control. Had we not intervened, Jezi would have been put to sleep at the Cleveland City Kennel. When Jezi first came to us as a puppy last November, she was too thin and was scared of everything.
Jezi has grown physically and emotionally in our care. Being petite, she’s reached her perfect weight of 44 pounds. Jezi is now as calm as she is beautiful. So calm, in fact, that her foster mom is able to take her to work every day. Her foster mom reports that, “Jezi loves men,” and that she’s “cuddly and people oriented, ...
