Minkin Music: No lack of talent in Cl...

By: Jay Minkin Date: 03/24/2010 There were days when Cleveland was a make-or-break performance destination for musicians to promote their upcoming releases. Lately we’ve been relegated to a tour bus drive-by with itinerary cities like Detroit, Ann Arbor, Columbus, and Pittsburgh hosting more quality shows. Fret not as my crystal ball is showing great promise that in the upcoming months our image as a great live concert town will improve.  A main force behind this surge of breaking shows is The Beachland Ballroom and Tavern.  With a 350 seating capacity in the ballroom and 160 in the tavern, the Beachland makes for an intimate place to see national touring acts.  ...

For those that are dialed into Sirius/XM satellite radio, you may be familiar with the lovely voice of Elizabeth Cook, host of Apron Strings from 6-10 AM weekdays on the station’s Outlaw Country channel (Sirius 64 and XM 12).Others may remember my story about three years ago before Elizabeth’s DJ gig touting her Rodney Crowell produced record Balls and the hottest song on the jukebox “Sometimes It Takes Balls To Be A Woman”.Well ladies and gentlemen, you have a chance to see the sweetheart of Outlaw Country in person when Cook takes the Beachland Ballroom stage on March 25th.

Bruce Springsteen’s epic storytelling banter during the song “Growng Up,” from the 1978 bootlegged tapes of the Cleveland Agora show, will forever be part of Lawrence J. Travagliante’s folklore. A true Cleveland radio legend, Lawrence, famously known as “Kid Leo,” began his DJ career in 1974 and became one of the most influential persons to shape the industry. Thousands of Northeast Ohio listeners became his students of rock n’ roll. Kid Leo was behind the mic and spinning records at WMMS weekday afternoons, until 1989 when he left to be VP of Artist Development for Columbia Records in New York City.

Every year, Playhouse Square brings the latest hot Broadway musical to Downtown Cleveland for its faithful patrons. Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, In the Heights is the story of three days in Washington Heights, a tight-knit community at the top of Manhattan. Currently playing on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre, the groundbreaking hip-hop and Latin music-infused production began its first national tour this past fall and will be coming to the Palace Theatre from Tuesday, February 9, to Sunday, February 21.  In the Heights centers on a variety of characters living in a neighborhood on the brink of change, where the bigges ...

The fourth installment of my personal favorites from the past year of CD buying binges begins with the ladies, including Rosanne Cash and The List, the bluesy Cleveland Telarc label’s Never Going Back, by Shemekia Copeland, and the soft, sultry Melody Gardot accompanying her piano on My One And Only Thrill.Big winners at the 2009 Americana Music Association awards were Buddy and Julie Miller and their epic Written In Chalk, as husband and wife share vocals. A renowned guitarist, Buddy gets to shine on his own recordings with lots of his friends paying him back by appearing on several tracks. The heavyweight division includes a diverse group of bands, ...

By: Jay Minkin Date: 12/08/2009 For those transplants to Northeast Ohio after the mid-80s, Michael Stanley was the hottest local rocker during the classic rock era, when FM radio was king. Now you can relive those thrilling days when Stanley and his current band, The Resonators, play two very special shows at the House of Blues on Friday, December 18, and Saturday, December 26. Hailing from Rocky River, Michael Stanley started out as a solo artist in 1973. With help from such heavy hitters as producer Bill Szymczyk and “session players” Joe Walsh and Todd Rundgren he recorded his first two records. Stanley’s first album included the hit single “Rosewood Bitters.&r ...

Category: Arts & Entertainment

By: Jay Minkin Date: 11/16/2009 Some excellent holiday gifts are part of the latest fall album releases that are sure to vie for my year end number one.      Rosanne Cash released her latest studio album entitled The List, based on a list of 100 greatest country and American songs that Johnny Cash gave her when she was 18. The 54 years young Rosanne is the eldest daughter of the late country music legend and his first wife, Vivian.    From 1981’s Seven Year Ache to 2006’s Black Cadillac, Rosanne Cash has created her own legacy as a great American singer/songwriter. Her voice still shines on the 12 recorded numbers for the album from the 100 song ...

Can one man and one musician create a movement that spreads a message to millions around the globe? The answer can be found on Friday, October 30, as the Beachland Ballroom will be presenting Playing For Change , at the Masonic Temple Auditorium, located at 3615 Euclid Avenue.  Please note this show has been moved to the club's ballroom instead of the previously announced Masonic Temple Auditorium. The idea came from Grammy award-winning producer/engineer/filmmaker Mark Johnson who captured a performance of “Stand By Me” by street blues musician Rodger Ridley on the pier in Santa Monica, California. Johnson next took the tape to New Orleans ...

As I get ready for my return to Nashville for the Americana Music Association’s awards night and showcases, I still have fond memories of last year seeing yet-to-be released music performances. Hearing songs like a version of the Grateful Dead’s “Tennessee Jed,” by Levon Helm, before it came out this year on his brilliant Electric Dirt record was a real treat. Another was the duet of two former members of The Jayhawks, Mark Olson and Gary Louris, who have two new releases worthy of your attention.  You’re best to buy the 20-track Music From The North Country Jayhawks anthology than going the download route. The band ...

I love Tuesday’s when new releases from faves like Wilco, Levon Helm, Elvis Costello, and Steve Earle hit the shelves. But as one big box store’s music section drifts off into the sunset, I took a road trip in search of our area’s finest independent music retailers.  With list in hand, I headed to Lakewood and My Mind’s Eye, at 13723 Madison Avenue.  The store is split into two halves, one for CDs and one for vinyl. The amount of new vinyl being released is mind-boggling. What once was considered an antique, the LP is making a comeback with the audiophiles and new generation of music lovers. A higher quality and heav ...
