Introducing La Ruche

It all started with an “Aha” moment.

One day Kathy Wilson, owner of Options Salon and Spa, was putting hand cream on after a long shift. She realized with the continuous dipping into shampoos, conditioners, hair colors, hot water, and back again—many times a day— that her hands needed more than lotion to keep them happy. So she asked Judy Bulcroft, a nurse, and co-owner of Meadowlake Farm, an organic honey based skin care company in Hiram Ohio, if they could create an all-natural scrub to soothe dry hands and feet. Kathy had no idea how far the collaboration would go.

Meadowlake Farm is family co-owned by Sally, also a nurse and cosmetic chemist and her husband, Joel. He is one of the few organic apiarists—beekeepers—in the country.

Nearly two years of formula-tweaking later and the ladies are proud to introduce to Cleveland the La Ruche Skin Care Line. (Pronounced “la-roosh”—the French word for “hive,” an homage to the 560,000 hard-working bees on the farm that produce the honey for the products.)

Judy reports that raw honey is an excellent natural exfoliate and humectant that helps skin retain moisture.

“All the products are made by hand on the farm, one batch at a time,” says Kathy. “To meet a variety of skin care types, from aging to acne-prone and sensitive, we chose to create a basic four-step home regime of cleanser, toner, exfoliator, and moisturizer, with a honey base mixed with delicious organic ingredients such as lavender, chamomile, aloe, willow bark, calendula, and goji berries just to name a few.”

Texture and Tone Perfect

For Carrie B. of Fairview, who has spent years under the care of dermatologists for rosacea and milia, the products have made a welcome difference.

“After just two weeks, I’ve noticed a lessening in my skin’s redness. My face feels as soft as baby’s skin,” she says.

As an extension of the product line, Options is introducing a host of La Ruche facials: Signature Daily Moisturizer, the French Hibiscus Facial, Timeless Age Correction Facial, Troubled Skin Facial, and By the Beautiful Sea Facial Treatment.

Living Up to the Name

“All the time and effort that went into bringing these fabulous products to market was worth it,” says Kathy. “I created the tagline for the salon 18 years ago, ‘Explore your Options…Experience the Difference,’ and am constantly striving to live up to it.”

Options is truly a hidden gem. Though it occupies what looks like a sliver of a corner in Fairview Shopping Centre, the salon and spa actually takes up more than 3,000 square feet of space.

The relaxing oasis-like setting spans a salon wing, with nine styling stations and the newly built interior retail center for La Ruche, and serenely sequestered behind glass doors is the spa wing, with a host of spa rooms for facials, massages, and body treatments.

Clean and inviting design blends expresso stations with warm gold and steel gray walls, a nail department separated by billowing cotton panels, and plenty of greenery throughout.

The Options service menu is just as eclectic, including everything from Keratin smoothing treatments to SHe natural hair extensions, manis and pedis, spray tans, and makeup.
